A major spiritual and historical site, Dambulla is renowned for its cave temple complex filled with ancient Buddhist murals and statues.

History & Heritage

Dambulla Cave Temple, also known as the Golden Temple of Dambulla, is one of the best-preserved cave temple complexes in Sri Lanka. Dating back to the 1st century BCE, it was established during the reign of King Valagamba, who took refuge in these caves while in exile and later transformed them into a place of worship after regaining his throne. The complex consists of five caves carved into a massive rock, each adorned with intricate murals and over 150 statues of Buddha, as well as depictions of Hindu deities and Sri Lankan kings. The paintings cover ceilings and walls, illustrating important events in Buddhist history and showcasing exceptional artistic craftsmanship. Over centuries, successive rulers contributed to the temple’s expansion and preservation, making it a living record of Sri Lanka’s religious and artistic evolution. Today, it stands as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, reflecting both spiritual devotion and cultural continuity.
