Unlike most Indian cities shaped over centuries, Chandigarh is a product of post-independence vision and planning. After the partition of India in 1947, the need for a new capital for Punjab led to the creation of Chandigarh. Designed primarily by the Swiss-French architect Le Corbusier, the city became a symbol of modern India’s aspirations—forward-looking, organized, and progressive. Le Corbusier’s master plan divided the city into self-sufficient sectors, each designed to function as a neighborhood with residential areas, markets, schools, and green spaces. The Capitol Complex, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, houses key government buildings such as the High Court, Secretariat, and Legislative Assembly, showcasing bold modernist architecture. While Chandigarh may not have ancient forts or palaces, its heritage lies in its revolutionary approach to urban design. It represents a shift from historical evolution to intentional planning, making it an important landmark in India’s architectural journey. Over time, the city has also developed its own identity through cultural institutions, gardens, and public spaces that reflect both functionality and creativity.
